Admission period started yesterday, which makes our department to go on a 8 days of hellish suffering.
Actually it's not really that bad compared to what they described last year. They said that the queue may go until like 50-100m under the hot sun! This may create angry parents I supposed.
This year, however is much more different. At least the queue is much more organised and to make things good, registration is done under the cooling air-cons.
I'm the crowd controller for this admission exercise, which is rather a relaxing job for me.What makes my job difficult will be the disoriented people who don't know where to start. Most of them don't even know they had to go through each station one by one(station 1,then 2,so on and so forth)and some skipped through one station because they thought it was rather "pointless".
Singaporean hate queuing for things that does not grant them free gift,it's a known fact.According to my colleague, the parents will fasten up the process by splitting themselves into 3 groups:Each of them holding on to the queue so that when one finished station 1,they will not go all the way at the end wasting their time queuing up.
I'll call this idea a "bookmark technique".Truly, this kind of people never fails to amaze me.
Lastly, things which I think can be changed:
1. Communication
Make sure the officer know what they're doing, instead of just trying to bring the parents to one big circle around the campus doing nothing.
2. Seats
Set up a dedicated place for the elderly and parents with baby to sit down. When the chairs were placed along station 1,some of them thought that the queue started from where they sit.
3.Signages
The arrow signs are all over the place to make confused parents worse.Solution?Remove all unwanted arrows and make a bigger signboard.
After 2 days of admission exercise,we still have 6 more days to go.All the way to my birthday(30/03/2007)!
