17 March 2007: 8 people went for a trekking they'll never forget.
It was quite an excellent weather for Bukit Timah Hill trekking.Thank God for the cloud that was used to cover the sun from burning into our skin.
Oh,and thank God for Yan Yi's friend Lola who is able to join us for the trekking. She's from a faraway country called Germany. How I wish I can go there for a vacation, maybe in Munich or Frankfurt.
I was rather late for the outing. You Seng was like waiting for me before he go for his music practice.Just as I thought I'm the only guy among the group of roses,Charles was here to be the male guide for the trekking. So I'm never alone.
And let the journey begins!
Climbing up the flight of stairs.Where will it lead us to?
Up up and away! All the way Chee Moon!
Chee Moon is stuck.I had to help her up the stairs, especially the higher steps.
The journey up is a long and tiring one.Don't forget it's just the beginning. There's more to come.
In this place, all you can see is green, green and even more green.Compared to outside, the air is fresher here.
Clear sky,thanks to God.
End of part 1.When we walked out of the vegetation,we saw alot morning joggers and trekkers walking past us.
For the remaining part of the journey,Chee Moon will not be with us.We'll let her go up the summit all by herself,in a easier route of course.
Okay, let's move on to part 2.
Yan Yi noticed that I'm taking their photo so she decided to pose for me.Sporty sister!
One more take.Smile at the camera!
Look how steep are the stairs!
Leaf that is used to wrap Ba Zhang?!
This is the tricky challenge for part 2.You have to learn your basic hill climbing skill.
You got to be careful sisters!
Steady,you're getting there.
In this event, team work plays an important role. You don't simply go for your one man show trekking.
Going up the hill is no kick for me,especially for an ex-army guy like me.
Is that an Orchid,or is it a carnivore plant?
Hero,choose your path.
A map at the halfway of our trip.
Let's take a break while Charles tries to plan for the next route.
Done with your rest?Let's proceed to part 3!
Along the way,we saw some strange looking plant, some were fascinating, while some were scary looking.
Take for example this leaf.It was infested with some kind of insects as if something horrible is going to pop out soon.If I were to poke the red thing, will there be alien ants coming out?
The 100 years old tree(as if). You'll see this tree of the same kind everywhere.
The reason why we should go Bukit Timah Hill often.
Jungle Fall Path should be fun!
We didn't know so many people, mainly the students came here for trekking.
The mini waterfall we saw along the way.The water look so clean and cooling.
Even the trekker came here to wash their hands. As for drinking,it's advisable not to,unless you're sure that the water over here is edible.
Into the dense vegetation we go.
There's some experiment going on here. What is it?
Is that some weapon of mass destruction?!
Suddenly we're stuck in a Y-junction.There are 2 ways to go.
1. A shorter path with alot of upslope.
2. A longer path with ???????? slope.(That's where Charles is uncertain of this path)
Okay,let's have a group discussion!
Hmmm.......
A: Option 1 is much safer,in my opinion.
B: But I think option 2 is challenging!
A: Chee Moon how?
B: Maybe we should call and ask her to go back Visitor Center.
A: Hmm....okay loh.
Okay,set!We shall take option 2!
Sugar,we're going down.
Let's take a photo of us feeling energetic before it's too late.
The long journey took us almost 45 minutes, which is not what the trekker uncle told us to be.Uncle, you cheat our feeling!
Thank goodness that we encounter more downslope than upslope, however the whole journey makes us tired. We had to encourage one another by telling ourselves that we're going to reach soon. No,this not telling ourselves a lie.Who knows,we're actually reaching soon.
Now meet your worst nightmare: Upslope!!!!!!
Oh my goodness!It's so upslope!
*pant* Yes,we're getting there. *pant*
Rengas Path. This is the path that we took.
Finally we've reached the summit!Hooray!!!!
Charles shall start the drum rolling by posing at the stone.
Take 1 without Charles.
Take 2 without Sandra.
Okay mission over.Let's go back to the Visitor Center.
Steep slope, please do not run,or else you're going rock 'n' roll.
Slowly take your time.
What is the best way to go downslope?First way as shown in the photo, you can walk backwards. When you do this, you're actually leaning forward, instead of leaning back which is much more difficult.
Second way is to move in zig-zag,as if you're drunk.I haven't tried this before.
When we returned to Visitor Center, the first thing I do is to fill up my bottle with cold water.Man I am sooooo thristy!
Okay let's go Bukit Timah hawker center for lunch!I need to replenishing my energy.
Some lesson learned during trekking:
1.Thou shall not feed the monkey!
2.Bukit Timah Hill is a place for rare species and beautiful plants. You got to be observant in order to find rare stuff.
3.Never wear jeans for trekking.Seriously,I made a huge mistake. It took me a whole day for the sweat in my jeans to dry out.I should have get myself a track pants.
4.Always know one another's limit.Belinda was half-dead when she reached the summit.
This is the first HGC outing I went so far. They next outing will be in West Coast Park for picnic, which I'm unable to make it because of my work on Saturday.I hope to go for the Bishan Home activity, which is either on the 1st or 31st May.
